So you’re looking to become a fully qualified gas engineer, but are wondering what tasks you will have to complete in order to achieve your NVQ qualifications. Let’s go through some key points you should know about our gas engineering course so you can be fully prepared for your journey to a better career.
Working From Home
For the first part of your gas engineering course, you will be studying from the comfort of your home via our bespoke manuals and unique virtual reality computer software. This software features multiple simulations of basic gas-based engineering jobs, asking you to select the right tools and equipment for the right job and see the tasks carried out in a simulated environment. We have found that online learning to be extremely useful and beneficial for our current students and helps to add a visual learning element to your training rather than focusing all of your attention on a manual.
While working from home, you will be assessed on your progress by a fully accredited and experienced tutor, training in the field you are studying for. As well as this, you will have full peace of mind that you will get all training done as we fit the learning around your day-to-day life. No deadlines, no pressure to get through the learning too quickly, do the learning at your own pace, and when you are ready and have passed the at-home learning, you will be invited to attend one of our nationwide training centres.
Training Centres
We have training centres located all across the UK, a full list can be found here. These training centres will put your newfound skills to the test, offering practical, hands-on learning, as well as more study work in the presence of a tutor and like-minded students.
You might be wondering how the study is possible at our training centres with a global pandemic currently sweeping the nation. We are happy to let you know that our facilities are following government guidelines to make them as covid-safe as possible. This includes having face masks worn at all times by all students and members of staff, floor markings throughout the facility to keep everyone at a 2m distance, and all of our tools and equipment are sanitised regularly.
Our training centres also benefit from individual working stations, allowing our students to focus on their work while still having access to tutor assistance and the general working environment.
What will I learn at the training centre?
During your time at one of our centres, you will learn all there is to know about gas-based health and safety. Working with gas and gas appliances is a dangerous task so fully understanding the risks and how to avoid them is key.
You will also be taught how to install appliances, how to service them, how to carry out a tightness test and go through the complete regulations for the Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) qualifications.
How do I get on the gas register?
You will be undergoing training at one of our centres for four weeks, with more time allowed if required as part of our training program with your designated tutor. Once you have completed this training, you will be tasked with going out and building a portfolio of approximately 28 jobs. This allows our students to prove that they have been working in the industry and have on-site experience.
Once these jobs have been carried out, your tutor will assess the paperwork describing the work undertaken and if approved, you will be invited to attend an ACS assessment.
These jobs will need to be completed with a gas safe qualified engineer, and photographic evidence will be required to back up the information provided in your paperwork. This work typically takes from 3 to 6 months to complete.
What are the jobs I need to carry out?
