What is World Plumbing Day?

This now yearly event was established by the World Plumbing Council in 2010 and was created to celebrate and recognise the millions of plumbing professionals who help to keep our water systems functional, our toilets flushing, and provide clean water to all.

We still have a long way to go before the entire world has access to clean drinking water, with the CIPH and World Health Organisation stating that there are still 785 million people around the world without access to this luxury. But thanks to more and more people taking part in plumbing courses to become fully qualified plumbers, like the ones at our college, that number is shrinking each day!

History of Plumbing

Plumbing dates back as far as The Roman Empire, with the Romans introducing aqueduct systems for carrying water to towns and cities. While lacking the modern plumbing benefits of pressurised water systems, heaters and coolers, it was still a revolutionary feat for the time. The Romans solution for this was to rely on gravity and descending concrete pipes.

Centuries later and we now enter the Victorian Era, and see the true origins of plumbing as we know it today. The Industrial Revolution is in full swing, and more and more workers are brought in, resulting in a rise in waste with nowhere to put it. This outbreak of various waste-related diseases resulted in the development of sewer systems to allow for proper waste disposal.
