An NVQ qualified electrician is an individual who has achieved a formal certification in their field. But how do you achieve this certification and what does it qualify you to do?
What is an NVQ?
NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification, and is a work-based UK qualification which proves that a person has the skills and knowledge necessary to complete a specific job. In order to work as an electrician within a company or self-employed, you will need a level 3 NVQ.
NVQs are assessed through candidates providing evidence that they are competent in carrying out the work necessary within their specific job role. These skills will be assessed over a period of time – a person needs at least 2 years of experience in their field to be able to achieve an NVQ. NVQs cannot be failed, an individual will either be classed as competent or incompetent on assessment – if classed as incompetent, the opportunity to prove competence will be offered in the future.
How do you become a qualified electrician?
There are a few options to consider when choosing to become a qualified electrician. Which depends on your personal preferences and current circumstances. You could become an apprentice, working as a trainee electrician. Studying to achieve a Level 3 technical certificate and an NVQ or a Level 3 Diploma. These certifications can also be achieved without the apprenticeship, however, a qualified electrician will need to have at least 3 years of experience in the industry.

What does a qualified electrician do?
A qualified domestic electrician will typically work in people’s homes to install, inspect, and test various electrical equipment. This could include refrigerators, lighting, fuse boxes, and TVs. Domestic electricians are different to commercial electricians, who will work in environments such as hospitals, warehouses, and retail shops. Becoming a commercial electrician requires a level 3 NVQ as well as additional training and qualifications. This could be something to consider once you have completed your initial electrician training.
How long does it take to become an NVQ qualified electrician?
The length of time it takes to complete your NVQ as an electrician will depend on how quickly you are able to cover each different type of work required to become qualified. On average, it will take an individual between 6 and 12 months to complete their NVQ. It is important to consider that your lifestyle might affect how long it takes you to complete your chosen course. For example, if you are studying alongside another job. Generally, an electrician will need 3 years of experience within the industry to be considered as qualified.
