What does it take to become an electrician?

What traits are expected from electricians? There are some skills that will be taken into consideration by potential employers and clients. Of course, some skills can be developed over time, however, if you already have some of these traits, that’s ideal!

  • Physical capacity. Typically, an electrician will spend his days on his feet. You will be expected to be physically able, not limited when it comes to climbing ladders, crawling, digging and so on.
  • Basic mathematical skills. You should be able to understand basic algebra and the science around electricity. Don’t know this already? No need to panic, you’ll be taught during training.
  • Good communication skills. Whether or not you’re working as part of a team, good communication is vital. You’ll be working with clients every day, this involves explaining the work you’re carrying out to solve their electrical problems.
  • Good balance. Electricians work with wiring all over homes, including high-up places! This will require you to have sufficient balance when working from a ladder.

How hard is it to become an electrician?

Training to become an electrician might seem daunting at first, but the process isn’t as difficult as you think! There’s more than one way to become an electrician, and there’s no right way to do it. It all depends on your circumstances. To become a qualified electrician, you will either need to complete an apprenticeship or complete a course (fast-track options are available).

Apprenticeships are most suitable for those who have just completed their GCSEs, leaving secondary school at around the age of 16. This will take around three years to complete, using a combination of studying and paid work experience to prepare you for the workplace.

Alternatively, you can opt for a fast-track course. This is potentially more suitable for those who are older, as apprenticeships can be difficult to find past the age of 19. Keep reading to find out more about electrical courses in the UK.
