Want to become a plumber but not sure where to start? The Trades College can help you gain all the essential plumbing qualifications needed to kickstart your career. Keep reading to learn more about why plumbing could be the right career choice for you.

What does a plumber do?

Plumbers are trained professionals who install and repair plumbing systems. This includes water supplies, heating systems, and sanitation units – either in domestic or commercial environments. Typically, plumbers will work alone, travelling between places to complete work. Some of the duties a plumber may perform include:

  • Assessing and repairing plumbing issues.
  • Calculating estimated prices of repairs.
  • Troubleshooting problems, providing the best long-term solutions.
  • Understanding blueprints and planning new installations.
  • Installing pipework and other water fixtures.
  • Using professional equipment to diagnose problems.
  • Repairing relevant appliances and fixtures (e.g. dishwashers, showers, toilets).
  • Cutting and welding pipework, fittings, and other parts.
  • Following all relevant regulations and codes.

Is plumbing a good career choice?

Now that you know what a plumber does, it’s time to consider whether it’s the right career for you. First of all, let’s talk about why plumbing is generally a great career choice. Looking at Reed’s most recent data, the average salary for a plumber in the UK is £35,515 per annum. This sits higher than the mean average salary for all workers in the UK, which is £31,447. Of course, hourly rates will depend on several factors, including experience and location. Generally, £40-£80 per hour is a fair price point.

The skills shortage in the UK means that qualified tradespeople are always in demand, leading to a premium wage and increased job security. It’s difficult to find this sense of stability in any other industry, as there tends to be a greater amount of competition for jobs.

As well as this, there’s always the potential for you to set up your own plumbing business. This could involve you being self-employed or hiring other qualified plumbers. Your earnings will increase greatly with this opportunity.

Of course, a job is more than just its salary. On an individual basis, you should consider becoming a plumber if you enjoy having a more hands-on job. The work you carry out will vary depending on demand, so you’ll never be stuck doing the same thing every day. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about finding a plumber again! Once you’ve got the skills, you’ll be able to apply them within your own home. All sounds good so far, right? Read on to find out more about gaining the right plumbing qualifications.

What plumbing qualifications do I need?

To become a fully qualified plumber, you’ll need to complete the relevant training. It’s essential to gain the City & Guilds level 2 certificate in Plumbing Studies, moving onto the City & Guilds level 3 certificate in Plumbing Studies to become a professional plumber.
